Malinda Young Smith

Malinda Young Smith, 71, of Piedmont passed away on October 8, 2023, after a long battle with cancer. She was preceded in death by her mother, Nellie Jo Ivey.                                                                                

Malinda leaves to cherish her memory her loving husband of 31 years, Jerry Wayne Smith, and her loyal Goldendoodle, Cheyenne, who was always by her side. She is also survived by one sister: Dawn Holmes Weaver of Foley; two nieces: Emily Smith and her sons, Brentley and Eli Hammett, of Piedmont; and Maggie Smith of Birmingham; two aunts: Mary Elizabeth Mobley and Joan Seymour; and special best friend, Delores Smith.                                                                                                                                                        

Malinda was born in Calhoun County and graduated from Piedmont High School.  She then attended Jacksonville State University where she completed her Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing.  After moving to Birmingham, she completed a Master’s Degree at the University of Alabama in Birmingham.  Her Master’s Degree was focused on the field of Neonatal Intensive Care. She worked as a Nurse Practitioner for 20 + years at Brookwood Hospital in the NICU unit.                                                                                                              

  Funeral services will be held Thursday, October 12, 2023 at 2:00 p.m. from Dansby Heritage Chapel with Rev. Hayward Clark officiating. Visitation will be from 1:00 -2:00 p.m. Interment will be in Piedmont Memory Garden.  Pallbearers will be Lathan Smith, Jason Smith, Jim Seymour, Eddie Hall, Donnie Anderson, and Don Rutherford.                                                                                                                              

We would like to express our gratitude to family, friends, and neighbors for the comfort they provided during this difficult time.  We would like to recognize Dr. Allen Yielding and his staff at the Brookwood Cancer Center.  Lastly, a special thanks to Hope Hospice at Rainbow City for their care and compassion during Malinda’s time of transition.
