You may need a certified copy of the certificate of death for the following:
Social Security: For Social Security Information call toll-free 1-877-701-2139. Personal service is available 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. each business day.
Life Insurance Policies: A certificate may be needed for each insurance company for which a policy (policies) is (are) owned.
Banks and Credit Unions: A certificate may be needed for each institution. This may be for savings accounts, checking accounts, time certificates, trust accounts, etc.
Tags and Licensing: A certificate will be needed for automobiles, trucks, snowmobiles, boats, trailers, travel trailers, motorcycles, etc. Titles, registrations, and proofs of insurance will be needed at the same time.
Real Property: A certificate needs to be filed with the Register of Deeds in each county where real property (land, etc.) is owned. Each county sets its own fee for this service. The certificate may be returned after the register of deeds has recorded the information.
Stocks and Bonds: A certificate may be needed for each company in which stock is owned. A certificate may be needed for each agency in which a bond is held. You may wish to consult your broker on this matter.
Lawyer: Your lawyer may request a copy/copies of the certificate for legal matters.
Probate Court: It may be necessary to have a certificate of death for the probate court.
Pension: Various retirement plans may require a copy of the death certificate.
Future: You may wish to have additional copies of the death certificate on hand for future needs. Family historians and genealogists appreciate the information found on the certificates.
